What is a Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve — the structure responsible for sending visual information to the brain. Most cases are associated with high eye pressure, but glaucoma can also occur with normal pressure.

Because early glaucoma is usually symptom-free, the only way to detect it is through a comprehensive eye exam.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Loss of side vision

  • Hazy or blurred spots

  • Halos around lights

  • Eye discomfort or redness

Early detection through routine exams is the best way to protect your vision.

Types of Glaucoma We See in Sandusky Patients

  • Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma
The most common form. It progresses slowly and silently.

  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma
A rarer form that can cause sudden eye pain, blurry vision, and nausea. This is an emergency.

  • Normal-Tension Glaucoma
Optic nerve damage occurs despite eye pressures being “normal.”

  • Secondary Glaucoma
Caused by trauma, inflammation, steroid use, diabetes, or other eye conditions.

Glaucoma Symptoms

Many patients have no symptoms at all until vision loss is advanced. When symptoms appear, they may include:

  • Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision

  • Difficulty seeing in dim light

  • Blurred vision

  • Halos around lights

  • Eye pain or pressure (more common in angle-closure glaucoma)

If you ever experience sudden eye pain with nausea or vision changes, seek emergency care.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

You may be at increased risk for glaucoma if you:

  • Are age 40 or older

  • Have a family history of glaucoma

  • Have diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea

  • Are highly nearsighted or farsighted

  • Have had eye trauma or eye surgery

  • Use long-term steroid medications

Residents in Sandusky and surrounding rural areas often go years between exams — making proactive screening even more important.
