Glare from inside the eye cannot be fully blocked externally.
Increased light sensitivity (also called photophobia) often occurs when the eye’s natural ability to filter light is reduced. Common causes include cataracts, dry eye disease, eye inflammation, or recent eye surgery. When light scatters inside the eye, it can feel uncomfortably bright—even on cloudy days.
Yes. Cataracts commonly cause increased glare and light sensitivity. As the natural lens becomes cloudy, sunlight and headlights scatter instead of focusing clearly, making bright environments uncomfortable and forcing many people to rely on sunglasses indoors or outdoors.
Glare from headlights, LED screens, or overhead lighting may feel harsher if the eye’s lens or tear film isn’t working properly. Cataracts, dry eye syndrome, and uncorrected vision changes can all worsen glare sensitivity—especially at night.
Absolutely. Dry eye disease disrupts the smooth tear layer that protects and focuses light entering the eye. Without that layer, light scatters unevenly, increasing discomfort and glare sensitivity. Treating dry eyes often reduces the need for constant sunglasses.
Some increase in light sensitivity can occur with age, but needing sunglasses far more often than before is not something to ignore. Age-related eye conditions—especially cataracts—are a frequent cause and should be evaluated with a comprehensive eye exam.
