Healing, Clarity, and Comfort After Cataract Surgery

At MiVision Eye Care, we believe great outcomes don’t end in the operating room — they continue through a smooth, comfortable recovery.
Led by Dr. Melanie Mihlstin, a Michigan-trained ophthalmologist, our team is dedicated to providing clear instructions, personal follow-up, and compassionate care to ensure you heal quickly and safely.

Most patients notice brighter, sharper vision within just a day or two. With today’s advanced techniques, cataract surgery recovery is easier and faster than ever.

What to Expect After Surgery

Immediately after surgery, your vision may be slightly blurry or hazy — this is completely normal and improves as your eye heals.
You’ll wear a small protective shield over your eye for the first night and will begin using prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.

Common experiences during the first 24–48 hours include:

  • Mild watering or itching

  • Slight sensitivity to light

  • A feeling of “something in the eye” (which fades within a day or two)

Most patients return to reading, watching TV, and light activities within a day, but full visual stabilization may take a few weeks.

Eye Drop Schedule and Follow-Up Care

Dr. Mihlstin will provide a custom drop schedule to support your healing. Be sure to:

  • Wash your hands before applying drops

  • Avoid touching your eye directly

  • Use each medication in the correct order and at the prescribed times

Follow-up visits are typically scheduled at:

  1. 1 day post-op – to check pressure and clarity

  2. 1 week post-op – to ensure steady healing

  3. 1 month post-op – to confirm stable vision and final results

💡 Tip: Keep your drops in a visible spot or set a phone reminder to stay consistent.

Restrictions and Activities to Avoid

While your eye heals, it’s important to protect it from excess pressure and contaminants.
For the first week, avoid:

  • Rubbing or pressing on your eye

  • Heavy lifting or bending over

  • Swimming, hot tubs, or dusty environments

  • Eye makeup or facial lotions near the eye

You can resume gentle walking or light household activities almost immediately.
If both eyes require surgery, the second procedure is often scheduled 1–2 weeks later.

Signs to Call Your Doctor

Although complications are rare, contact our office immediately if you notice:

  • Sudden vision loss or worsening blurriness

  • Increasing redness, pain, or discharge

  • Flashes of light or new floaters

Your safety and comfort are our top priorities — our team is always available to answer questions or provide reassurance during your recovery.

Long-Term Vision and Results

Cataract surgery is a permanent solution — the cloudy lens will not return.
However, some patients develop a “secondary cataract” (posterior capsule opacification) months or years later. This can easily be corrected with a quick, painless YAG laser procedure performed right in our office.

Most patients enjoy dramatically improved vision and reduced dependence on glasses, especially when choosing premium lens implants.

Caring for Your Vision Long After Surgery

Regular eye exams help ensure your results last for years. We’ll monitor your eye health, lens clarity, and pressure during future visits.
