Eye Pain or Pressure — What It Means & When to Seek Care

Eye pain can feel sharp, dull, aching, or like pressure inside or around the eye. While many causes are mild, certain symptoms can indicate more serious eye conditions — especially if pain is sudden, persistent, or associated with vision changes.

MiVision offers same-week appointments for patients experiencing eye pain, pressure, or discomfort in our Saginaw Office.

Common Causes of Eye Pain or Pressure

Dry Eye Syndrome

  • Dry eye can cause burning, aching, sharp pain, or pressure around the eye — especially after screen time or in dry environments.

Eye Strain or Fatigue

  • Extended computer use, poor lighting, or outdated glasses can cause discomfort around the eyes.

Sinus Pressure

  • Sinus inflammation often creates pressure around or behind the eyes, especially when bending forward.

Migraine or Headache-Related Eye Pain

  • Migraines can cause eye soreness, light sensitivity, and pain around one side of the head or eye.

Corneal Irritation or Foreign Body

  • Dust, makeup, contact lenses, or scratches on the eye can cause sharp pain, tearing, or light sensitivity.

Glaucoma (Increased Eye Pressure)

Acute glaucoma can cause severe eye pain, headache, nausea, and blurred vision — this is an emergency.

Inflammation (Uveitis or Scleritis)

  • These conditions can cause deep, aching pain and may require prompt treatment.

Early Cataracts

  • While cataracts do not directly cause pain, strain or glare sensitivity related to them can make the eyes feel uncomfortable.
